Question about silver medallic art rounds

What's your opinion on these medallic art rounds?
- Typically they are struck in sterling(.925 fine) and they were produced in the 70's.
-These Longines Wittnauer examples are about 35 grams = 32 grams pure silver.
-Some of these are gold gilted, 24k gold electroplated on sterling. Does this enhance it's value, has no effect on it's value or lessens it's value?
Take a look...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=280038559559
If you can get them for around spot, is it a good buy?

Personally, I don't like these. They are not marked with their purity, content, or weight.

If you like them as art, then they are OK, but if you want to sell you will have to find a buyer that appreciates them as art. One ounce .999 rounds are so much easier.

Silverwood:

I have sixty of the Franklin Mint Medallic History of the United States medallions, which are very similar to your medallion. Mine are gold-plated big heavy (1.15-1.3 ounce sterling silver) very high relief medallions. They are stamped with their purity on the coin edge. These are actually very beautiful - each a work of art and craftmanship. I picked them up in late 2005 at Ebay - I was in a silver-acquisition mode at the time. I snarfed them up for about $4.50 each (spot silver was about $7.70). These particular medallions are part of a larger 200 medal collection issued by the Franklin Mint in the late 1970's, during the run up on silver, and apparently were sold on an installment plan for $50 each!

As collectables, I've seen these medallions selling for $12 -$25. As for their silver content value: realistically, the gold plating adds zilch to their value, and they would probably sell for 10% below the spot price of silver at best. So, at the time of this writing, if you are purchasing them for their silver content, $10 per medallion is a fair price.

It is my humble opinion that you should be at least paying $1.00 under spot for 925 sterling silver.

You will not be paid full spot price when taking it to a smelter, because they would have to refine it to get to .999 silver.

You may be in for a nasty suprise if you take the plated ones to a refinery....when I was in the biz, I could not find anypne that would process the plated ones....I ended up selling them over the counter cheap to get rid of them.....

and yes, if you are buying sterling, it should be well under spot as you will not get near spot upon resale. The high buyer in my area is paying 85% of spot for clean stuff....the low buyer 70%....
